Biographical Sketch of James E. Madden
James E. Madden, a notable businessman in Ontario, operates a successful livery and feed stable, ensuring the comfort and safety of his clients. Born on May 31, 1849, in Ohio, he endured a challenging upbringing but was determined to succeed. Madden’s journey took him from farming in Iowa to sheep and cattle raising in Oregon, overcoming significant losses during harsh winters. Resilient, he eventually settled in Ontario, where he improved his land and contributed to the community. He and his wife, L. A. Barnett, had nine children, earning him respect for his hard work and dedication.
Biography of J. L. Raines
J. L. Raines, a prominent Kansas banker, was elected president of the Kansas State Bankers Association in 1916. He co-founded the Bank of Perry in 1890, where he served as cashier until becoming president in 1908. Born in Missouri in 1852, Raines spent most of his life in Jefferson County, Kansas, after moving there in 1866. He had a diverse career, including roles as a teacher and county superintendent of schools. A family man, he and his wife Fannie had four children, with two surviving into adulthood.
Biography of Joseph B. Hulse
Joseph B. Hulse, born in Glenwood, Iowa, on January 3, 1859, is the owner of Hailey’s sole photography gallery. His family’s roots trace back to early German settlers in New England. After gaining experience in photography, he opened his Alturas gallery in 1889 before relocating to Hailey in 1895. Hulse, who initially supported the Republican Party, joined the Populist Party and was elected to the state legislature in 1898. Married to Kittle G. Spargur, they have three children and are well-respected in their community.
Biographical Sketch of J. J. Dalton
J. J. Dalton, born on July 1, 1855, in Illinois, moved to various locations before settling in Mankato in 1873. He became Jewell County Treasurer at the age of twenty-one and has held multiple government positions since. In 1874, he established a drug and jewelry business, still active today. Dalton is involved with several fraternal organizations, including the Odd Fellows and K. of P., where he holds leadership roles. He married M. V. Snyder in Jewell County on November 20, 1881.
Clark, Chauncey – Obituary
Chauncey H. Clark passed away on July 31, 1927, at the age of 78, at his daughter’s home in Union. Born on September 8, 1849, in Peoria, Illinois, he married Harriet Hepner in 1872 and moved to Oregon in 1878. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, with three children predeceasing him. Despite his declining health, Mr. Clark remained active in his son’s plumbing business. His funeral was held on August 3, attended by family and friends, and he was interred alongside his children in Union Cemetery.
Godsey, Stephen T. – Obituary
Stephen T. Godsey passed away at the age of 61 on February 18, 1922. His funeral, attended by many friends and neighbors, featured a sermon by Rev. Cook of the M. E. Church. Born in 1860 in Putnam County, Missouri, he moved to Mills County, Iowa, at age four and later settled in Union in 1905. Married to Lora Clark in 1894, they had eight children, with six surviving him. Godsey was known as an honorable citizen and a valued member of his community.
Wichman, Phyllis L. Olander Mrs. – Obituary
Phyllis L. Olander Wichman, 76, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away on March 6, 2005. She was born on October 6, 1928, and had a distinguished career in education, teaching at various high schools in the area until her retirement in 1990. A dedicated member of Broadway United Methodist Church and several organizations, she is survived by her daughter, son, and extended family. Her funeral is scheduled for March 11 at Broadway United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to the church.
