Since acquiring the Kansas Chief he had improved its influence and strengthened its organization and equipment in keeping with the dignity of the paper as the oldest journal under one continuous name in the State of Kansas. Mrs. B.T. Long received word Thursday evening of the death of her father, P. L. Courtney at Payette, Idaho and left for that place Friday. M. O. Courtney of Lostine accompanied her. P. L. Courtney was one of the earliest settlers of the valley and lived here until recent years when he was compelled to try a different climate to relieve asthma from which he was a sufferer. Mrs. Mary Jane Gumm died at her home here Friday [May 1, 1914] . She was born in Appanoose County, Iowa, November 9, 1852. She lived there until 1865 and then came to Oregon with her parents. The whole journey was made with an ox team. She settled with her parents near Scio. She was married to J. T. Bilyeu in 1868. There were three children born, Mrs. Oscar Gresham and William J.
