Ralph W. Squires, present register of deeds of Shawnee County, was born at Columbus, Ohio, April 29, 1870, and was nine years of age when brought to Kansas by his parents, Jeremiah and Virginia E. (Schimp) Squires, and for a few years the family lived on the farm in Pottawatomie County. The recollection of the booming of the prairie chickens in the spring when frost covered the earth in the morning, the cries of the plover, and other incidents of pioneer life, left an indelible impress on his youthful mind. He received his education in the public schools and later took up the study of pharmacy, and the retail drug business has been his permanent employment. At the November election of 1914 there were 132 names on the ballot for the various offices, from United States Senator on down, and his name as a candidate for the office of register of deeds received a greater number of votes than any other. He has decidedly made good in the office to which he was elected and is vindicating the confidence of the people who felt him capable of discharging its duties efficiently. Mr. Squires is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason and has the honor of having served as master of Topeka Lodge No. 17, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. He is also a member of the Shawnee Golf Club.
Mr. Squires married Miss Jennie Griesen, of Topeka, December 14, 1894, and they have one daughter, Virginia.
