Wallowa, Oregon Linz Hammack, Early Day Freighter, Passes (By Lostine Correspondent) Funeral services were held for John L. Hammack, better known as Linz at the Christian church. Rev. Earle Miller of Wallowa conducted the services. The Pall bearers were: M. Crow, Roy Edgmand, Harrison Holmes, D. H. Magill, Edgar Marvin and Edward Thompson. A quartette, Mrs. Ella McArtor, Mrs. Helen Bright, Chas. Bridwell and Melvin Crow, sang “No Night There”. And “Sweet By And By”. Mack C. Shelton Passes To Rest Mack C. Shelton was born in Dallas County, Iowa on February 25, 1885. He crossed the plains with his parents in 1862, coming first to Willamette valley. In 1873 he came to Union county and purchased a quarter section of land two and one-half miles northwest of Elgin in 1878. While he lived in this vicinity he was engaged in farming and stock-raising. Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon Mrs. James Thorp passed away Friday morning, July 2, 1937, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.M. Myers in Enterprise. She suffered a paralytic stroke some time before and nearly recovered from this. Her last illness was of only three weeks duration. The family took the body to Weiser, Idaho, Saturday, and funeral services were held at Cambridge. Mrs. H. P. Throe (Cala L. Fovargue) Joseph, Oregon Mrs. H.P. Throe, a pioneer of Union and Wallowa counties, died after an operation performed at the Enterprise Hospital. Cala L. Fovargue was born May 2nd, 1854, in Elkriver Township, Clinton County Iowa. She was married to Hans P. Throe January 14th 1872. In November of 1877 they moved to Abilene, Kansas. Enterprise, Oregon The passing of one of Wallowa’s pioneers occurred Tuesday morning July 9th, when Aunt Mary Wright died at her home in Enterprise after an illness of several months. She and her husband homesteaded on Alder slope among the very first settlers in the county. Had she lived until December would have 89 years.
