This is a list of Illinois historical newspapers images and transcriptions available online. They are organized by website and then alphabetically within each website listing. Some titles may appear more than once, as the images might be hosted on multiple websites. It’s important to check all listings for a particular newspaper to ensure you find the best quality scans.
The Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections
The Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Library contain over 250,000 pages across 249 newspapers, most of which were published in Illinois during the 20th century. These collections are free to search, browse, and download.
In addition to Illinois Newspapers, the IDNC include three subject-focused collections. Farm, Field, and Fireside is a collection of Midwestern farm newspapers. The newspapers in American Popular Entertainment were published for the rapidly growing industry of mass entertainment, including theater, sports, and tourism. Collegiate Chronicle is a collection of college student newspapers. There is also a list of Black Newspapers which would cater to the black residents in an area, I have marked these with the label “black” in the list below, to denote this.
