Calavan, Virgil L. – Obituary

Virgil L. Calavan, 75, former Albany mayor who was active in civic affairs here for many years, died Friday morning in a Corvallis hospital after a long illness. Mr. Calavan was the former owner of a drug store in East Albany which is now Lammers’ Pharmacy. After selling the East Albany store he operated Mason’s Drug Store in downtown Albany, which is now owned by Gerald Steele. He had lived in Corvallis since 1946. A 1911 graduate of Oregon State College, Mr. Calavan was a school principal in eastern Linn County before he opened his first drug store in Albany. … Read more

James Madison Calavan, well-known resident and pioneer of Oregon, died at the family home, 804 Taylor Street, Friday night [February 8, 1924], after an illness of several months. James M. Calavan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Calavan Sr., was born in Kentucky, October 24, 1845 and crossed the plains with an ox team to Oregon in 1863. Warren S. Byam died Tuesday evening [April 11, 1911] after a short illness. Had he lived until the 19th, he would have been 62 years old. He was a native of Ohio and he claimed to have seen army frontier service in his younger day, being stationed near Cheyenne, Wyo. He later enlisted in the navy and served several years. Mrs. Mary Ellen Byam, aged 72, died early Tuesday morning [November 8, 1932] after a few hours’ illness, at her home on Mont Vernon Street. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at two o’clock at Smith’s Funeral Chapel, for Mrs. Mary Lee Butler, 79, who died in Monmouth [August 19, 1930] after a long illness. Dr. Frank E. Butler, Portland radiologist who retired three years ago, died Wednesday afternoon [January 1, 1949] at Emanuel Hospital after a brief illness. He had made his home at Neotsu on Devil’s Lake since retiring. Dr. Butler was the son of Orville and Mary Butler, pioneers in the Willamette Valley.
