Graveside services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Hermiston Cemetery. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements. J.D. was born May 19, 1915, to Frank and Clara (Hadley) Steinbeck in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and later from Boeing Aircraft School in California. Island City, Union County, Oregon A very deplorable accident occurred at Island City Monday morning resulting in the death of Eugene, the eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Staples. Alec M. Stackland, 67, passed on at his home in Portland March 15 from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. He was the first of seven children the widowed mother brought from Norway in the nineties. Local Hunter Shot To Death Gordon Spray, 54, La Grande, became the first recorded fatality of the 1973 Oregon deer season during the weekend. At least one other hunter was shot to death and two died of apparent heart attacks.
