Stone, Karl R. – Obituary

Karl Roy Stone, a well-known La Grande businessman and longtime head of the Union County Planning Commission, died Saturday at Grande Ronde Hospital. He was 89. Mr. Stone, of 1703 Cedar St., was born on Sept. 15, 1895, in Sterling, Kan., to Robert and Amalia “Mollie” Birk. He served with the U.S. Army during World War I, and was corporal of the honor guards at the funeral of Buffalo Bill Cody at Pike’s Peak, Colo. He married Genevieve Rogers at Watertown, N.Y., on Aug. 27, 1919. The couple homesteaded near Reedsport in 1920, and Mr. Stone owned and operated the … Read more

La Grande, Union County, Oregon Mrs. Karl R. (Genevieve) Stone of 1703 Cedar, died Monday at Grande Ronde Hospital. Mrs. Stone was born in Brier Hill, N.Y.; the daughter of William H. and Amanda Jane (Guernsey) Rogers. She taught music in a Watertown, N.Y., elementary school before she married Karl R. Stone on Aug. 27, 1919, in Watertown. The Stones moved to Oregon in 1920, and in 1943 came to La Grande from the Willamette Valley. They were owners of the Stone Cream Station for 20 years. Elgin, Oregon Shirley Elaine Stoddard, 66, formerly of Union County, died April 26 at her daughter’s home in Baker City. A celebration of Shirley’s life and a memorial service and potluck will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the V.F.W. Hall, 518 N. Main St. in Union. Shirley was born Jan. 26, 1942, to Lawrence and Alberta (Holcomb) Conner in Halfway. She was raised in Halfway, Pondosa, Baker City, Elgin and graduated from Baker High School. Born in Logan, Cache County, Utah, Mrs. Stoddard had resided in La Grande for 58 years. She was a member of the LDS Church and Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Stitzel, Marion Merl – Obituary

Union County, Oregon Marion Merl Stitzel, 84, of Union died June 8 of pulmonary fibrosis at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show and Rodeo grounds. Graveside services took place today at the Union Cemetery beginning at 1 p.m. Marion was born to Amos and Hazel Stitzel, April 11, 1923, in Jordan Valley. He lived in Arock until about 1939 and then moved to Union where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army in 1942 and was discharged in December 1945.
