Gale “Jean” Standley, 89, of La Grande, died Aug. 29 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church.

Jean was born on Nov. 18, 1917, to Robert Gale and Edna (Wissler) Sturdivant in La Grande. In 1934, she graduated from La Grande High School. She attended Eastern Oregon Normal School, University of Oregon and Northwestern Business College. On Dec. 4, 1938, she married J. Dale Standley in La Grande. Their family farm has been designated as a “Century Farm.”

Jean was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church and a member of Hope Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Union County Nile Club, La Grande Country Club and the Rusty Wheels Car Club. Those who knew her say she enjoyed her family and home as well as golf, bridge and pinochle and sewing and knitting.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, David and Carol Standley of Corvallis, James and Sally Standley of La Grande and Linda and John Gothie of Aloha; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Mary Lou Standley.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the Presbyterian Church in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.
