Mrs. G. Carver, Valley Pioneer, Expires Today Resident Here Since 1876; Passes At Age Of 77 After Long Illness Mrs. George W. Carver passed away at her home at 9 o’clock this morning [November 14, 1930] following a long illness and after being bedfast for more than three months, at the age of 77 years. Mrs. Carver was one of the earliest pioneers of the Kittitas valley, coming here in 1876. Rosetta Curtis was born in Macomb County, Michigan, January 3, 1853. She was married to George W. Curtis, James H. – Obituary

James H. Curtis, one of the early pioneers of the valley, who came here in 1873, died suddenly last Saturday at Brewster, Wash., according to work received here. He was born July 1, 1849, in McCoon County, Mich. In 1875 he was married in The Dalles, Ore., to Miss Samantha Wheeler. Four of their six children are living Mrs. Tillie Hayes and Mrs. Etta Vaughn of Ellensburg, and Mrs. May Goldberg and Wesley Curtis of Brewster are surviving children. Harry O. Covey, 83, of Cle Elum, died Monday, Dec. 24, 1990, at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital, in Ellensburg. He was born March 1, 1907, in Ovando, Mont., a son of Harry and Bertha (Paye) Covey. He lived for 10 years in Canada, where he delivered mail by dog team under contract with the Canadian postal service. For the past 51 years he had lived in the Cle Elum area, where he was a mink rancher. He was a member of the Swauk-Teanaway Grange. Harry George Covey, 88, died this morning at the Sorensen Memorial Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for the past six years [died March 28, 1953]. Covey was born August 7, 1864, at Poplar Grove, Ill. He lived there until 1885, when he moved to Montana, and came to Washington following the death of his wife, Mrs. Bertha Covey, in 1907. Winifred Cooke, 83, died Monday [January 13, 1975] at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. She was born March 13, 1891 in Capac, Mich., and after marrying Chester A. Cooke in 1910 moved to the Edgemont-Thrall area where they farmed. He proceeded her in death in 1950. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Ohlander, Mrs. Frances Bryant and Mrs. Ruth Treischel, all of Seattle, two sons, Bruce of Milton and Bob of Chelan, 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Cooke, Virinda Wheeler

Mrs. Ward Cooke, of East Kittitas, and who has been seriously indisposed for some time, died Thursday forenoon. The funeral takes place in the forenoon at the residence and the burial at 1 p.m., Saturday, in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The grief stricken husband and family have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. Virinda was the daughter of Charles Wheeler and Mariah Fry. She was born February 23, 1861 in Yelm, WA and died August 2, 1906. Virinda married Edward Ward Cooke in 1878. She was the mother of 12 children.

Cooke, Norman L. – Obituary

Norman L. Cooke of Route 3, Ellensburg died at Veteran’s Hospital in Seattle yesterday afternoon about an hour after he had been taken there by the Evenson ambulance. He was born in Oregon and was 70 years of age. The body will be returned here for funeral services and burial. Norman was born March 29, 1893 in Eugene, Oregon. He was married to Irma Lucile Wilson on March 29, 1935 in Ellensburg. I know of no children. He died September 15, 1963.

Lloyd R. Cooke, 63, of 517 N. J. St., died Thursday [June 20, 1963] while visiting in Fresno, California. Born in Ellensburg, he had lived in Tacoma 30 years. He was a retired smelter worker and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Ancient Order of United Workman. He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Kenneth of Tacoma; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Keller of Torrance, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Charles Bull of Calgary, Alta.; and three grandchildren. Lester V. Cooke, 96, of Ellensburg died Thursday in Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. He was born January 27, 1890, in a house on the banks of Coleman Creek north of Ellensburg. He parents were early Kittitas Valley pioneers Mode and Isabella (Fulton) Cooke. After graduating from Ellensburg High School in 1910, Mr. Cooke entered Washington State College, where he received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture in 1914. The people of this community were surprised and shocked to learn that Jay Cooke had died Monday [July 22, 1907] night at his home about twelve miles northeast of town. He only took to his bed last Saturday, but he was unable to combat the fearful ailment—gall stones—and passed away as stated.
