Benz,Paul A. – Obituary

Paul A. Benz Sr., 91, of Yakima and formerly of Toppenish, died Saturday [October 3, 1987] in Yakima Convalescent Center. Mr. Benz farmed and operated a produce warehouse in the Toppenish area for many years, and was active in the American Legion Post No. 50 of Toppenish. Survivors include two sons: Paul A. Benz, Jr. of Toppenish and Lew E. Benz of Vancouver, Washington.; and a daughter, Patricia A. Aaker of Boulder, Colorado. Colonial Funeral Home in Toppenish is in charge of arrangements. Wigle, Malinda Jane Dixon – Obituary

Mrs. Malinda J. Wigle died in Mabton, Dec. 29, 1916, aged 86 years, 2 months and 13 days. Funeral services were held in the M. E. Church Sunday, and burial was in Mabton cemetery. Mrs. Wigle was a native of Illinois, residing there until her marriage to Thomas Grewell, and moved to Corydon, Iowa. In 1863 she, with her husband and family, started across the plains. When in Wyoming, her husband was taken ill and died at Independence Rock, Wyo. With her children she resumed her journey westward, arriving at Vancouver, Wash. the same year. Mrs. Retta Johnson of Toppenish, Route 1, died Saturday [May 22] evening at the age of 42. The deceased, who was born in California, had lived in this community 28 years. She leaves her husband, Dexter Johnson and two children, Grace Muggy and Claude. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from the Hopkins Mortuary in Toppenish with Rev. A. S. Earl P. Cooke, 57, resident of Yakima for the past seven years, died in a Yakima hospital Monday [December 27] evening. He had made his home at 301 N. 26th Ave. Mr. Cooke was born in Ellensburg. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morand D. Cooke were pioneers of the Ellensburg District. He is survived by his wife, Hazel; one sister, Mrs. Laurin T. Mrs. Nellie R. Whitson, 78, who first came to Yakima as a child in 1865 and was a member of one of the first white families to settle in the valley, died in St. Elizabeth’s hospital last night [January 2, 1939]. Lafayette [Lafyette] Little, age 67, constable of Tieton and Yakima Valley resident for 46 years, died early Monday night in bed [April 11, 1927] as the result of a heart attack. He apparently had been in good health. Mr. Little crossed the plains in 1866, when six years of age. He lived in Oregon for a time and in Idaho and moved then to the Yakima Valley. William M. Lee, who came to Whitman County in 1872 from Walla Walla, died at his home in this city Tuesday evening [June 16, 1925], surrounded by his wife and four surviving children.
