Takelma Tribe

The Takelma Indians, also known as Dāagelmáεn, inhabited the Rogue River region in southwestern Oregon. Their language is distinct from neighboring tribes, with at least two dialects. Culturally, they shared ties with the Shasta people and depended on acorns and salmon for sustenance. Their social structure was simple, with small villages and a chieftaincy based on wealth. Marriage practices involved bride purchase, and they performed limited ceremonies centered on key life events. Today, few survivors reside on the Siletz Reservation.
