Shuman Indians
The Shuman Indians, often referred to as Jumano or Suma, inhabited regions along the Rio Grande from the Concho River to present-day El Paso. Historically categorized within Uto-Aztecan, they comprised two main divisions and several villages. First encountered by Cabeza de Vaca in 1536, they were later documented by explorers and missionaries. Over time, they faced decline due to conflicts and alliances, particularly with the Apache. By the late 19th century, their population dwindled to merely one known survivor.
