William Charles “Bill” Knechtel (1926-2008) of Baker City, Oregon, passed away on June 14, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Care Center. Born on May 8, 1926, in Pittsburgh, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Penn State and worked as a forester for the U.S. Forest Service, retiring in 1981 after 33 years of service. He married Dorothy Barbara Lorez on September 1, 1946, and they had three children. Bill was an avid gunsmith and outdoorsman. He was survived by his wife, two sons, a brother, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A graveside memorial service was held on June 28, 2008, at Mount Hope Cemetery.

John Gilbert “Jack” Ferguson (1916-2008) of Halfway, Oregon, passed away on June 12, 2008, at age 92. Born on March 11, 1916, in Akeley, Minnesota, to Benjamin Franklin and Minnie Belle Jenkins Ferguson, Jack moved to Renton, California, during the Great Depression. He graduated from Renton High School in 1936 and married Eleanor Owen on February 8, 1941. Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying 19 missions over Japan. After the war, he operated Pine Mercantile Inc. in Halfway until retirement. Jack is survived by his wife, three children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Military honors were held on June 20, 2008, at Pine Haven Cemetery.
