Natchitoches Confederacy

The Natchitoches tribe, part of the Caddo division, is associated with various names deriving from local languages, possibly referencing their environment. Located in northwestern Louisiana, they interacted with explorers like Tonti and Bienville, facing challenges such as crop failure and conflict with other tribes. Historically, their population dwindled from an estimated 400-450 warriors in 1700 to 52 by 1805. The city of Natchitoches, named after them, represents the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana and marks their significant role in regional history.
