Jumano Indians
The Jumano Indians, first noted by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca in 1535, were a semi-agricultural tribe inhabiting the Rio Grande region. Their lifestyle included hunting buffalo and cultivating crops like beans and maize. Despite their initial prominence, the Jumano experienced a gradual decline, with their settlements abandoned due to Apache incursions and a shift to a more nomadic life on the plains. Historical records suggest their eventual absorption into the Tawehash and Wichita tribes, leading to their disappearance from documentation after the 18th century.
