Arrival of Early Pioneers to Baker County Oregon
In June 1862, prospectors from California and Nevada journeyed to Powder River, expecting to find gold at Salmon River mines. Among them was Hardin Estes, who, with the White Horse company, built the first bridge across Powder River after navigating difficult terrain. Meanwhile, John P. Bowen and his group sought fortune but ultimately decided to stay, leading to the establishment of the Auburn mining community. As claims were staked and towns like Pocahontas emerged, early pioneers shaped the region’s burgeoning mining landscape.
