Biography of John William Whalley

John William Whalley, born on April 28, 1833, in Nova Scotia, descended from a long lineage of Yorkshire yoemen. His early education in classics was curtailed by financial constraints, leading him to apprentice at sea and later in mercantile education in New York. After a mining stint during the California Gold Rush, he became a teacher and later a successful attorney in Oregon. Whalley was active in politics, law, and conservation, advocating for game laws and participating in various sportsman associations. He was recognized for his legal acumen and writing talents.
