Dean L. Speight

Private Dean L. Speight, of Company 1, Artillery, 3rd Army Corps, was the son of C.R. Speight from Pitt County. He entered military service on March 1, 1918, in Spring Hope, N.C., and underwent training at Camp Jackson and Camp Merritt before deploying to France on March 30, 1918. Speight participated in several key battles, including Champagne and Meuse-Argonne, and suffered gas exposure at Verdun. After seven months with the Army of Occupation in Germany, he returned to the U.S. on August 3, 1919, and was mustered out on August 10.
