HON. SYLVESTER PENNOYER. – Sylvester Pennoyer, the present governor of Oregon, was born in Groton, Tompkins county, in the State of New York, on July 6, 1831. His father was a pioneer in that section of the country, having moved from Dutchess county in the same state just after his marriage, and settled upon a piece of government land while it was a wilderness, and which he afterwards, by his own labor and with the help of his sons, transformed into one of those beautiful and valuable farms for which New York State is so famous. In 1940 and 1941 Mrs. Sterling B. Jordan and Mrs. Frank W. Seth walked the 18 cemeteries in Poundridge, New York compiling the names and dates for all gravestones. Added to some of those gravestone listings were familial relationships if known. In addition, they referenced an even earlier listing of a few of the cemeteries by William Eardley taken in 1901.

The exact origin of the fire is somewhat indefinite; the one that visited Hinckley must have started in the region south of Mission Creek. Around this little village much of the pine had been cut. There was in the hamlet twenty-six houses, a schoolhouse, a small sawmill a general store, hotel and blacksmith shop. At the time of the fire there were seventy-three people living in, and adjacent to, this village; a great number of the population were away from home, having gone to Dakota for the harvest.
