George Peery, along with his brothers William and James, emigrated from Scotland and established themselves in Tazewell County, Virginia. He married Martha Davidson from Ireland, raising a large family of three sons and nine daughters. Their youngest son, Joseph, moved to Montgomery County, Missouri, in 1836 with his wife Elizabeth Hall. The Peerys were known for their warmth and hospitality, earning high regard in their community, particularly Dr. Thomas Peery, whose passing in 1875 was a significant loss.
Rufus Benton Peery, born in Virginia on April 9, 1868, became president of Midland College in 1912, following a distinguished career as a Lutheran minister and missionary in Japan. His family has deep Revolutionary roots, with ancestors who fought for independence. Peery was educated at Roanoke College and Princeton Theological Seminary, and he published works on Japan while serving there. Married in 1895, he and his wife Lettie had six children, continuing the family’s legacy of service and education.
1st Lt. Price Vance Peery served in the Medical Corps with Ambulance Company No. 43, 80th Division, 319th Regiment. Hailing from Lenoir County and married to Elizabeth Woodley Peery, he entered the military on August 25, 1917. After training in Newport News, he sailed for France on May 17, 1918. He participated in significant battles such as St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne, serving as acting surgeon throughout the fighting. He was mustered out on April 19, 1919, at Camp Lee, Virginia.
