Biography of William S. Oury
William S. Oury, born on August 13, 1816, in Virginia, moved west and participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Arriving in Arizona in 1856, he engaged in stock raising and participated in several expeditions against Native Americans. He organized the controversial Camp Grant expedition in 1871, which aimed to retaliate against Apache raids, resulting in the killing of many Indians. Oury later shared his account of these events, emphasizing the motivations behind the violence, and became the first president of the Pioneers Society in Tucson, where he died in 1887.
