The series contains original affidavits of registration that record personal information about each registrant, their photograph affixed to the majority of documents, and the registrants fingerprints. All of these are specific to Kansas, and most have the actual documents attached.
Henry J. Michels, a prominent farmer and pioneer of the Kittitas Valley, passed away on October 12, 1943, at the age of 69. Originally from St. James, Minnesota, he moved to the valley in 1882 and spent over six decades there. Educated in Ellensburg, he married Anna Olding in 1900. Michels devoted most of his life to farming, except for a brief period in the drayage business. He is survived by his wife, a son, siblings, and many relatives. Funeral services will take place at St. Andrews Catholic Church.
Clarence Benedict “Uncle Ben” Michels, aged 66, passed away from a heart attack on April 16, 1957, after enduring ongoing health issues. A native of Ellensburg, he attended local schools and universities. Married in 1922, he became a widower in 1931. A veteran of World War I, he was active in St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and the American Legion. At the time of his death, he was involved in mining ventures. He is survived by his sister, a stepson, and several siblings and relatives.
Peter Michels, aged 63, passed away at his home in Ellensburg on May 19, 1942, after a prolonged illness. Born in St. James, Minnesota, in 1878, he moved to Ellensburg with his family in 1882. He married Minnie Taylor in 1902. Michels is survived by his wife, three brothers, four sisters, and a cousin. Funeral services will take place at St. Andres Catholic Church on Thursday morning.
Anna Michels, a 69-year-old resident of the Kittitas Valley, passed away at her home on August 25, 1949, after a prolonged illness. Born in Ellensburg on May 23, 1880, she married Henry J. Michels in 1900, who predeceased her in 1943. Anna served on the Kittitas County Fair Board for several years. She is survived by her son, Roy, and four sisters. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Honeycutt-Evenson Chapel, with interment at the IOOF cemetery.
Martin Michels, Sr., an 80-year-old pioneer of Ellensburg, passed away on February 14, 1917, after a prolonged illness. Born in Germany in 1837, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1855 and married Margaret Lenhartz in 1859. The Michels family settled in Kittitas Valley in 1882. He was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and is survived by his wife, eleven children, 34 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, many of whom reside in Ellensburg. Funeral arrangements will be announced upon the arrival of his son.
Frank Michels, aged 83, passed away on March 27, 1951, at the Airway Nursing Home. Born on October 10, 1868, in Shakopee, Minnesota, he moved to Ellensburg at 15. He was married twice, first to Mary O’Brien in 1892, who predeceased him, and later to Vera Johnson. Michels operated a ranch in Menastash Canyon for 20 years before residing in Ellensburg. He is survived by his wife, two sons, stepchildren, siblings, numerous grandchildren, and other relatives. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Mabel Anita Michels, aged 26, passed away on February 23 in Milwaukie, Oregon. She was the wife of Martin L. Michels and mother to Beatrice Louise. Her remains were transported to Ellensburg, Washington for services and interment at IOOF Cemetery. Born and raised in Ellensburg, Mabel is survived by her husband, daughter, parents, and two brothers. Funeral services were conducted at her uncle’s home, officiated by Rev. Lux.
