Abstracts of over 600 wills for Vanderburgh County, Indiana, extracted by Mrs. Arthur C. Bitterman. Book A was typed by Mrs. James A. Gentry, book B typed by Mrs. Marvin J. Huff, and published as one by the Vanderburgh Chapter of the DAR. Book A primarily covers wills written or filed within the time period of 1823-1849 and book B includes the years of 1849-1873. In both cases there are wills that fall outside those dates.

Following Pike’s return from Santa Fe, interest surged for further exploration. In 1821, expeditions led by Major Jacob Fowler and General Thomas James departed towards Santa Fe after witnessing the impact of previous travelers’ accounts. Fowler’s party advanced from Fort Smith, while James’s group left St. Louis with a keel boat, trading goods with local tribes. Both parties faced significant challenges but eventually reached Santa Fe, paving the way for continued American trade in the region, culminating in further expeditions and encounters with the Comanche.
Hiram Charlton took on the publication of the Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont for Lewis Publishing. In it, he enlisted the assistance of living residents of the state in providing biographical and genealogical details about their family, and then he published all 1104 family histories in two distinct volumes.
Jesse McKnight, born on February 4, 1866, in Missouri, has spent thirty-nine years in Indian Territory, where he became an accomplished farmer and respected community member. Orphaned at ten, he began working early and drove stagecoaches before settling on a 50-acre homestead near Chelsea. His successful farming ventures now include a 460-acre tract and several oil wells. Married to Susie Downing in 1894, they have seven children and are active in community and fraternal organizations, exemplifying the pioneering spirit of northeastern Oklahoma.
Fort Shaw Industrial Indian Boarding School, established in Montana in 1891, ceased operations on June 30, 1910, due to decreasing enrollment. Known for its 1904 girls basketball team, which won a championship at the St. Louis World’s Fair, the school played a significant role in Indigenous education during its tenure. The 1910 census was compiled under the Department of the Interior to record enrolled students as part of Circular #448. Relevant records are preserved in the National Archives and the Family History Library.
