Educated at the Royal College in Belfast, he practiced law in partnership with his brother before establishing a successful firm in Seaforth. Known for his integrity and efficiency, he served as solicitor for local banks and held various community roles, including reeve and school board chairman. A Presbyterian elder, he married Sarah Ferris in 1868 and had four children.
