(See Ghigau)-James Highland born February 19, 1877 is the son Michael and Nellie (Smith) Highland, the former a native of Dublin, Ireland and the born at Webber’s Falls, Cherokee Nation. James Highland was educated in the Cherokee public schools and Willie Halsell College, Vinita, Married at Vinita, September 8, 1910 Belle, daughter of William Alma Robbins. Mr. Highland was a member of Battery D, Heavy Artillery in the Spanish-American war. He is a Knight of Pythias. He has been in the meat business Vinita as cutter since 1894.
Whatever may be their origins in antiquity, the Cherokees are generally thought to be a Southeastern tribe, with roots in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, among other states, though many Cherokees are identified today with Oklahoma, to which they had been forcibly removed by treaty in the 1830s, or with the lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokees in western North Carolina.
