Mechanic F. Artly served in the 113th Regiment of the 30th Division during World War I. Hailing from Pitt County, North Carolina, he entered the military in April 1917, receiving training at Camp Sevier and Camp Mills. He sailed to France in May 1918 and was promoted to mechanic in November of the same year. Artly participated in significant battles, including St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne, before being mustered out in March 1919 at Camp Jackson, South Carolina.
