Established around a mill operated by Sheshbazzar Bentley Sr. and Jr. on Pigeon Creek in 1816, the town grew to a population of 300 by 1868. The author traces the origins of Bentleysville back to the 1770s to document the earliest settlers, while also providing context through significant national events like the Whiskey Rebellion and the Civil War. Ezra Green (1746-1847) was a surgeon aboard the Continental Ship-of-War “Ranger” when he penned a diary describing the voyage and conflicts met. The diary itself will shed light on other members of the crew, some who lost their lives in battle. Also included in the manuscript are two brief genealogies of early ancestors of Ezra, James Green of Charlestown and John Hayes of Dover.
Mrs. C.W. Green Buried Wednesday Mrs. Charles W. Green, mother of Mrs. C.K. White, of this city, passed away at Los Angeles, Calif., Saturday, November 8, after an extended illness caused by cancer. The body was brought to Baker accompanied by Mr. Green. The deceased was a resident of Baker for thirty years, where with Mr. Green, she conducted a grocery business. Oliver Uel Todd7, (Uel6, Oliver5, Abraham4, Jonah3, Samuel2, Christopher1) born Oct. 5, 1805, in South Salem, N. Y., died Oct. 5, 1880, married Dec. 10, 1832, Hester Jane Green, who was born Sept. 12, 1809, died Feb. 18, 1896. At the age of seven, he moved to Somers, N. Y., with the other members of the family, and settled upon the farm which afterwards became his own and home for life. Being a history of the descendants of Richard Dexter of Malden, Massachusetts, from the notes of John Haven Dexter and original researches. Richard Dexter, who was admitted an inhabitant of Boston (New England), Feb. 28, 1642, came from within ten miles of the town of Slane, Co. Meath, Ireland, and belonged to a branch of that family of Dexter who were descendants of Richard de Excester, the Lord Justice of Ireland. He, with his wife Bridget, and three or more children, fled to England from the great Irish Massacre of the Protestants which commenced Oct. 27, 1641. When Richard Dexter and family left England and by what vessel, we are unable to state, but he could not have remained there long, as we know he was living at Boston prior to Feb. 28, 1642.

In the preparation of “The Wilson family, Somerset and Barter Hill branch” I have discovered two lists of the names of the sons and daughters of Col. Ben and Ann Seay Wilson of “Somerset” in Cumberland County, Virginia, in addition to the list found in my father’s notes. None of these was arranged in the same chronological order. It was my good fortune in 1915 to find the Bible, claimed to be the Bible of Col. Ben and Ann Seay Wilson of “Somerset” in Cumberland County, Virginia. At that time this was in the hands of Miss Clementine Reid Wilson, Col. Ben’s great-granddaughter, and it was my privilege to copy, with the aid of a reading glass, for the ink was badly faded, the names of their children from that Bible in the same chronological order in which they were recorded. This chronological order, and military records found, support each other. I therefore believe that this sketch contains the most accurate chronological list of Col. Ben’s and Ann Seay Wilson’s children to be found outside of his Bible.
List of Choctaw Freedmen whose names were omitted from final rolls because no application was made or by. reason of mistake or oversight. Shows the names of 281 persons, all minors except 4. The approved roll of minor Choctaw freedmen contains 473 names. The large percentage of omissions in this class is explained elsewhere. It is quite probable that there are others of this class whose claims have not yet been presented or disclosed.
Edmund Ingalls, son of Robert, was born about 1598 in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England. He immigrated in 1628 to Salem, Massachusetts and with his brother, Francis, founded Lynn, Massachusetts in 1629. He married Ann, fathered nine children, and died in 1648.
James T. Green was born in Knox county, Kentucky, October 13, 1833. His father is a native of Goochland county, Virginia, and his mother a native of Kentucky. His parents came to Daviess county when he was four years of age, and purchased a farm near Gallatin, where they lived nineteen years. James T. was there reared and educated, and remained until he removed to Monroe township.
