Biographical Sketch of John Gowing Jr.
James Gowing, Jr., of Scotch descent, immigrated to Dublin from Lynnfield, Massachusetts, in 1788. He married Abigail Greenwood in 1772 and had eight children. His father, James, Sr., settled in Jaffrey in 1777. Notably, Joseph, his son, led the Dublin Grenadiers, while Almerin, born in 1799, served as selectman in 1837-39. The family continued to play significant roles in the community, with descendants like George A. and Charles W. Gowing contributing to the town’s history.
