Ira T. Fryar served as a Private in Company C, 35th Engineers of the 81st Grand Division. Born to W. D. and Emma Fryar in Sampson County, he enlisted on October 3, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. After initial training at Camp Jackson and transfers to Camp Grant and Camp Merritt, he sailed to St. Nazaire, France, on March 5, 1918. Fryar contributed to construction and railroad projects in France, returning to the U.S. on December 30, 1918, and was mustered out on February 24, 1919.
Jerry L. Fryar, originally from Tennessee, moved to Texas in 1870. After exploring various occupations, he established himself as the local agent for the New Home Sewing Machine Company in Bonham in 1885. Operating from Post-office Row, he built a successful business by maintaining a large stock of machines and organs. Known for his fair dealing and amicable demeanor, Fryar earned popularity and success in Fannin County through his dedicated customer service and the quality of his products.
