This survey of Wintergreen Cemetery, Port Gibson, Mississippi, was completed in 1956 by Mr. Gordon M. Wells and published by Joyce Bridges the same year. It contains the cemetery readings Mr. Wells was able to obtain at that date. It is highly likely that not all of the gravestones had survived up to that point, and it is even more likely that a large portion of interred individuals never had a gravestone.

After years of struggle, he and fellow emigrants reached Natchez, only to encounter further tragedy. Among them, Captain Matthew Phelps experienced profound loss, burying family members along the treacherous journey, yet he ultimately persevered, sharing his harrowing experiences with future generations.
George E. Easley, born on February 19, 1895, near Pawhuska, Oklahoma, hails from a prominent local family. His father, William Easley, significantly impacted the state’s agricultural development. George was educated in Missouri and Oklahoma, later serving in the Medical Corps during World War I. He now lives retired in Bartlesville, deriving income from oil royalties. He married Marie Watkins, and they have two daughters, Pauline and Martha. Both families have deep roots in the region and are well-respected.
Wilma C. Easley, a 95-year-old resident of La Grande, passed away on June 9 at her home. Born on February 29, 1912, in Courtland, Kansas, she had a long career in education, teaching Latin and math at La Grande High School until her retirement in 1966. Active in her community, she served in various roles at the First Christian Church and held memberships in several organizations. Wilma is survived by her husband, Carlos, their children, grandchildren, and siblings. A memorial service is scheduled for June 15.
Carlos Eugene Easley, 91, passed away on May 10 at his home in La Grande, Oregon. His funeral service will be held at the First Christian Church. Born in 1917 in Texas, Easley had a long and distinguished career in education, serving over three decades at Eastern Oregon College, including roles as dean of instruction and interim president. He was deeply involved in community service and recognized as Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1977. He is survived by his three children and numerous grandchildren.
The compiled military service records of 1,235 Rough Riders, including Theodore Roosevelt, have been digitized. Each record features individual jackets detailing the soldier’s name, organization, rank, and medical records. The records also contain personal information and documentation descriptions. Discharges occurred for various reasons, such as age, ability, discipline issues, or hardship. This initiative provides significant insights into the personnel of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish-American War.
