Slave Narrative of Mary Crane

In an interview conducted by Emery Turner, 82-year-old Mary Crane recounts her early life as the daughter of slaves in Kentucky. Born in 1855, she remembers her mother being owned by Wattie Williams and her father by Mr. Duret. Crane highlights the practice of “nigger-traders,” who bought and sold slaves at auction. While generally treated well by their masters, she notes instances of mistreatment. She recalls the impact of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which prompted many former slaves, including her father, to join the Union Army.
