Downs, Francis Helen – Obituary
Francis Helen Ward Downs was born on March 14, 1886, in Unionville, Missouri, and passed away on January 19, 1918, in Lostine, Oregon, at the age of 31. She moved to Lostine with her family at a young age and married Henry W. Downs in 1909, with whom she had three children, two of whom survived her. A member of the Seventh-day Adventist faith, her funeral services were led by Rev. Bogue and Rev. Williams, with burial in Lostine Cemetery.
David G. Downs
Wagoner Downs, serving in the 6th Company of the 1st Corps Artillery Park, was the son of S. W. Downs from Pineville, N.C. He enlisted on March 7, 1918, trained at Camp Jackson, and was deployed to France shortly after. He participated in significant battles including the Champagne-Marne and Aisne-Marne offensives, and the Oise-Aisne and Meuse-Argonne offensives, sustaining gas injuries. Downs returned to the U.S. on August 4, 1919, and was discharged on August 9.
Biographical Sketch of Dr. Horace P. Downs
Dr. Horace P. Downs, born in 1840 in Freedom, New Hampshire, pursued a medical education at Bowdoin College, graduating in 1865. After practicing in New Hampshire, he relocated to Whatcom County, Washington, in 1878, where he became a prominent figure in local governance. Elected as a county commissioner in 1880 and later auditor, he has significantly contributed to the organization of Skagit County. A successful businessman and landowner, Dr. Downs is recognized as a leading citizen in the Pacific Northwest.
