The Rockingham County Historical Society in Wentworth, NC, publishes the Journal of Rockingham County History and Genealogy twice a year, in April and October. This journal includes articles about the history and genealogical resources of Rockingham County, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas. The historical articles are of high quality and extensively researched. This book covers the first three years of publication, 1976-1978. Biography of Forrest C. Donnell

Forrest C. Donnell, born on August 20, 1884, in Quitman, Missouri, was a prominent St. Louis attorney and a founding member of the firm Spencer Donnell. He graduated from the University of Missouri, excelling academically and participating in various societies. After moving to St. Louis in 1907, he practiced law and served as general attorney for the University of Missouri. A community leader, Donnell was involved in numerous organizations, including the Board of Children’s Guardians and the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce. He married Hilda Hays in 1913 and had two children.

Biographical Sketch of J. K. Donnell

J. K. Donnell, born in Tyrone County, Ireland, in 1835, began his career as a grocery clerk at age 13. After moving to America, he worked in Philadelphia before starting his own retail grocery business in 1857. In 1867, he relocated to Mattoon, Illinois, where he pioneered the city’s wholesale grocery trade. By 1878, he focused exclusively on wholesale operations, achieving noteworthy success with annual revenues between $130,000 and $150,000, while also managing a fruit farm and various properties. His success is attributed to diligent management and integrity.
