Ancestry of Walter Lyman French

Most of the Frenches of the Bridgewaters and vicinity descend from John French, of Braintree. This John French was born about 1612, in England. Before coming to Braintree, of which point he was an inhabitant in 1640, and a freeman in 1644, he had been a short time at Dorchester. He died Aug. 16, 1692, aged about eighty. His wife Grace died Feb. 28, 1680-81, aged fifty-nine years. Walter Lyman French, the gentleman whose name introduces this article was one of Brockton’s enterprising business men, one who had achieved marked success in various branches of industry and trade. He was born in Brockton Mass. (then North Bridgewater) May 4, 1843, son of the late Francis M. and. Nancy L. (Blake) French. Walter is a direct descendant of John and Grace French of Braintree Mass.

Biographical Sketch of J. B. Dike

Dike, J. B., Bristol, was born in Milton, Chittenden county, Vt., on August 24, 1808. His parents were Jonathan, jr., and Sally (Caswell) Dike. Jonathan, jr., was a son of Jonathan, sr., who was a resident of the town of Milton, Vt., for many years. Jonathan, jr., had a family of three children — David C. (born October 16, 1802, in Milton, Vt.), Sally C. (born August, 22, 1885). Jonathan B. resided in Starksboro, Vt., for about two years. He came to reside in Bristol, Vt., in 1851. Biographical Sketch of Ezra C. Dike

Dike, Ezra C., Bristol, was born in Bolton, Vt., on April 4, 1837. He went into business for himself as a merchant in February, 1869, as a partner in the firm of Dike, Bixbee & Co., who were then general hardware merchants. He was married twice. His first wife was Lucy Rood, by whom he had one child, Bertha L. His second wife was Sarah Needham, a daughter of William and Mary Needham. She was a granddaughter of Dr. Joseph Needham, of Bristol, Vt.
