Early Probate Records of Hampton, N.H.

The early probate records of the Province of New Hampshire, from 1635 to 1771, have been published in nine volumes (vols. 31-39) of the set “New Hampshire State Papers” edited by Albert Stillman Batchellor, Henry Harrison Metcalf, and Otis G. Hammond. Originally published in the years 1907-1941 these books are available in many libraries throughout New Hampshire. The list included here contains transcriptions of some of the early probate records for Hampton, New Hampshire. It is not a complete list of the available probate records.

Biographical Sketch of Alva J. Dearborn

Alva J. Dearborn, born on October 13, 1851, in Canterbury, N.H., took over his family’s farm at seventeen, following his father’s death. A successful farmer, he expanded the property to about three hundred acres and ventured into the wood, lumber, and dairy industries, shipping milk to Boston. Married to Ada Belle Cochran in 1883, they had four children. A Republican active in local politics, Dearborn is well-respected in Canterbury for his contributions to the community and agriculture.

Biography of Joseph Henry Dearborn

Joseph Henry Dearborn, born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, on April 19, 1849, emerged as a prominent farmer and community leader in Pembroke. The son of Joseph J. Dearborn, he hailed from a long line of New Hampshire settlers descending from Godfrey Dearborn. Educated at Harvard, Joseph pursued a career in dry-goods before embracing agriculture in Pembroke. Politically active as a Republican, he served in various local governance roles. He married Sarah Frances Stevens, with whom he had three children.
