Compiled in 1851–1852 by Alfred Chapman, the Chapman Roll lists 2,133 Eastern Cherokees approved for treaty payments after complaints about omissions from the Siler Roll. It records names, family relationships, ages, residences, and enrollment numbers across several states. It helped determine eligibility for later Guion Miller claims.
The Guion-Miller Commission did not decide Cherokee eligibility based on ancestry alone, but on descent from the treaty-era Cherokee tribal body tied to the Eastern Cherokee Domain. Applicants had to prove residence, enrollment, or continued association with recognized Cherokee communities through rolls, testimony, and affidavits. Many claims failed because family tradition was not enough.
The application of Elijah Eaves, rejected under the Guion Miller Roll, involved claims from descendants of Alexander Brown, who was recorded on the 1835 Cherokee roll. Evidence presented indicated complications regarding the applicants’ heritage, including conflicting testimonies about Brown’s residency and tribal affiliation. No descendants were enrolled or received government benefits, raising doubts about their connection to the Cherokee. Despite claims of descent through Alexander Brown, all applications were ultimately rejected due to insufficient proof of lineage and tribal membership.
Isom Durham White’s application for Cherokee enrollment was rejected due to the lack of documented proof of his ancestry. Born in 1841 in Missouri, his familial roots trace back to Kentucky, well outside the recognized Cherokee territory of 1835. White’s parents and grandparents were not listed on the 1835 or 1851 Cherokee rolls, undermining any claims of descent. Furthermore, he could not provide living witnesses to attest to his lineage, ultimately resulting in the denial of his application based on insufficient evidence.

Some papers, like the Norwich Bulletin, are especially valuable for family history research. For towns without digitized newspapers, exploring nearby options is advised.
The Cherokee Muster Rolls of 1835-1838 document the forced relocation of the Cherokee people during the Trail of Tears.
