JoAnn was born on Sept. 17, 1931, to Claude and Rachel Makinson Krigbaum. She was raised in the Wallowa Mountains of Halfway, Ore. In 1949, she graduated from Pine Valley High School. She married the love of her life, Herb Hulse and was married on May 28, 1949. They were married 58 years. She and Herb helped on the family’s dairy farm and Herb also worked on the Oxbow Dam. They had three children, John, Kay, and Joanie.
The Hulse family move to Burbank, Wash., in May, 1959. They acquired a 150-acre farm, located in Block 3 under the Homestead Act. JoAnn was a very busy housewife. She loved taking care of the household, enjoyed baking bread, cakes, cookies and candy. She also spent many hours reading and sewing clothing for her children. JoAnn gave birth to their 4th child, Kristie in the winter of 1960. JoAnn was known to be a lot of fun. Said funning sayings, joked and teased a lot. She enjoyed the life of a farm family, seeing the fruit of all their hard labor. They farmed this land until 1968.
In 1968, the family bought raw land and cleared it for alfalfa crops, built a new home and farmed this land in Block 17, north of Pasco. The family farmed until 1972 when the two oldest children graduated from high school, college, and moved away from home. Herb and JoAnn felt they could not farm without the help of the two oldest children and sold the land and moved the family again to Eltopia, Wash., where Herb worked for the South Columbia Irrigation District until retirement.
Herb and JoAnn retired to Kennewick, Wash., where JoAnn enjoyed reading, sewing, baking, fishing, traveling, gambling, yard sales, walking, and time with her grandchildren.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, Herb of Renton Wash.; son John and wife Cynthia, Renton, Wash.; daughters, Kay and her husband, Rick Tosto Kennewick, Wash., Joanie, and her husband, Scott Thorne Pasco, Wash., and Kristie and her husband, Mel Vaughn Coos Bay, Ore.; brother, Phil, (Mardi) Krigbaum; sister, Lana, (Jim) Sloan; 6 granddaughters; 3 grandsons; aunt, Marie Colombari of Baker City; sisters-in-law, Virgene Payton Fugit, Halfway, Ore., and Corene Hulse Pasco, Wash.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
