Mr. Hallgarth was born June 29, 1921, to James and Ada Hazelwood Hallgarth in Elgin. He worked in farming and then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Nova Jean Widell on May 16, 1942, in La Grande.
He worked at various mills in the Elgin area, and at the Boise Cascade mill in Elgin until he retired in l984. He was a member of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, and an EMT with the Elgin Ambulance. He was a member of the La Grande Eagles Lodge, the Odd Fellows Lodge 49, and a past Master of the Rockwall Grange. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, dancing and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of Elgin; children and their spouses, Donna and Jim Trump, Jim and Risa Hallgarth, and Wayne Hallgarth, all of Elgin; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a sister, Helen Smith of Port Orchard, Wash. A brother and two grandchildren died earlier.
Memorials may be made to the Elgin Fire Department for the new building fund, or the Elgin Ambulance Fund in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.
