Wallowa County native James B.” J.B.” Conaway, 74, died Monday, April 10, 1989, in McMinnville.
He was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Enterprise, the son of A. Barry and Edna (Browning) Conaway. He was raised and educated in Enterprise.
On Aug. 28, 1938, he married Violet Varney in Joseph.
Conaway was a grade school principal in La Grande before moving to McMinnville in the early 1950s, where he was principal at the junior and senior high schools. He also taught at Linfield College. He moved to Anchorage Burrough, Alaska, in 1969, and served as director of elementary education. In 1972, he moved to Vancouver, Wash., and was principal for the Vancouver School District until retiring and returning to McMinnville in 1981.
Conaway was a member of McMinnville United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club, and a World War II Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Violet; son, Michael of Klamath Falls; daughters, Molly Emerson, Portland, and Katherine Conaway and Leslie Conaway, both of McMinnville.
Services were held Friday, April 14. at the McMinnville United Methodist Church. Internment followed in the McMinnville Masonic Cemetery
