Cathey, Laura Louise Ray Mrs. – Obituary

Laura Louise Cathey, 101, of Ontario, a former Baker City resident, died April 28, 2008, at Ontario with family at her side.

Her graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Jon Privett will officiate. There will be a reception for family and friends after the service at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene, 1250 Hughes Lane.

Laura was born on Nov. 1, 1906, at Rushville, Neb., to James and Hulda Ray. She was the second child in a family of 12 children. Laura’s family moved to Montana when she was a teenager.

She met Hugh Cathey, a Montana rancher, and they were married in October 1925. The couple raised five children: Velma Corwin, Lloyd Cathey, LaVern Cathey, Verla Boles and Sharon Derrick. Hugh died in 1958 and Laura never remarried.

“She was a devout Christian and was looking forward to going home to be with the Lord and her loved ones,” her family said.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four children, three sisters, eight brothers, four grandsons, and one granddaughter.

Survivors include one daughter, Verla Boles, and her husband, Bill, of Baker City; son-in-law, Harley Derrick of Ontario; daughter-in-law, Maxine Cathey of La Grande; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the charity of one’s choice through Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, Idaho 83661.
