La Grande, Union County, Oregon Mrs. Karl R. (Genevieve) Stone of 1703 Cedar, died Monday at Grande Ronde Hospital. Mrs. Stone was born in Brier Hill, N.Y.; the daughter of William H. and Amanda Jane (Guernsey) Rogers. She taught music in a Watertown, N.Y., elementary school before she married Karl R. Stone on Aug. 27, 1919, in Watertown. The Stones moved to Oregon in 1920, and in 1943 came to La Grande from the Willamette Valley. They were owners of the Stone Cream Station for 20 years. Karl Roy Stone, a well-known La Grande businessman and longtime head of the Union County Planning Commission, died Saturday at Grande Ronde Hospital. He was 89. Mr. Stone, of 1703 Cedar St., was born on Sept. 15, 1895, in Sterling, Kan., to Robert and Amalia “Mollie” Birk. He served with the U.S. Army during World War I, and was corporal of the honor guards at the funeral of Buffalo Bill Cody at Pike’s Peak, Colo. Alec M. Stackland, 67, passed on at his home in Portland March 15 from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. He was the first of seven children the widowed mother brought from Norway in the nineties. Another of the pioneer residents of Elgin answered the last roll call at midnight, Friday April 4, 1913, when Mrs Jennie Thompson passed from life. The funeral services were conducted in the Christian Church Sunday afternoon, and the remains intered beside those of her husband, who died less than a year ago. Daughter of the late Thomas and Katherine Griffin, of Corning, New York; wife of Dr. Wm. E. Wishart, of Charlotte, N.C. Was on the staff at the General Hospital, Rochester, N. Y., as nurse when U. S. entered the war. Joined the Red Cross Service in December, 1917, and assigned as Army Nurse to Base Hospital at Camp Travis, San Antonio, Texas. Remained in service until June 1, 1918, and was mustered out at Camp Travis, Texas, on that date.

Jonathan Leonard, U.S. Air Force Reserve, 47, formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 22, 1996, along with nine other airmen aboard the HC-130 cargo aircraft, call sign King 56, which crashed in the Pacific Ocean 40 miles out from Cape Mendocino, Calif. J. J. Lee, an Oregon pioneer and an old resident of Pendleton, died at his home on Alta Street Sunday morning [May 25, 1890] at four o’clock, after an illness of five weeks. Mr. Lee was born in New York [New Jersey] in 1816. When he was two years old his parents removed to Ohio, and remained in that State until his marriage in 1842 with Miss Mary Armsby [Ormsby], who now survives him. Charles Hascall of Pilot Rock died last night at home. He was 84 years of age and was born in 1837 near Syracuse, New York. At the age of three he moved with his parents to Vermont and remained there until 50 years of age after which he came to Pilot Rock.
