Hallock, Ahlma Rose MacDonald – Obituary

Ahlma R. MacDonald, 99, a resident of Tacoma the past 64 years, died Monday [January 7, 1985]. Mrs. MacDonald was born in Heppner, Ore. She was a retired librarian who had worked in Portland and New York City. She was a former member of the Ladies Musical Club, pro America, Tacoma County & Golf Club and Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club. Canarsee Indians. Formerly one of the leading tribes on Long Island, New York, occupying most of what is now Kings County and the shores of Jamaica Bay, with their center near Flatlands. According to Ruttenber they were subject to or connected with the Montauk; however, is doubtful, as the Indians of the west end of the island appear to have been paying tribute, at the time of the Dutch settlement of New York, to the Iroquois. Mrs. Roxy L. Pease, who died Oct. 31st was born Aug. 28th 1832, in Steuben County, New York. At the age of 20 she married B. S. [Benjamin Salisbury] Pease and soon after immigrated to the then territory of Iowa. After a few years residence there the family again immigrated, this time to territory of Minnesota, where they lived until 1877, when they came to Kittitas Valley where she resided until the time of her death. Aged pioneer of valley loses his life in the river; Samuel Newell Bannister, resident of valley for many years, drowns; Body is recovered; Falls from Lower River Bridge at noon yesterday; No witnesses Samuel Newell Banister, 92, a pioneer of this state and the Kittitas valley, lost his life yesterday when he fell from the lower Yakima River bridge into the river. Robert Cooke, 72, of Ellensburg, died Friday at the Gold Leaf Care Center. He was born on Long Island, New York, January 1, 1917. He and Gwen (Ferguson) Davis were married in Seattle on Sept. 20, 1951. They came to Ellensburg in 1957. Mr. Cooke was a merchant seaman until retirement in 1965. Miss Abbie R. Bender, for three months a resident of Ellensburg, died here Wednesday. She is survived by two brothers, William and Louis Bender of this city, and Frank Bender, another brother, resides at Glendale, Cal Abbie was the daughter of William W. Bender and Margaret Coughtry. Mrs. Margaret Brisson of 306 East Seventh Street died at her home Sunday morning at 8:45 o’clock. She had been suffering for several months with cancer of the stomach, which finally caused her death. William Bender, a 71-year-old bachelor farmer of the Menastash Canyon District, died in his bed sometime Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Eugene King, a hired man, told the sheriff’s deputies and assistant prosecuting attorney Philip A. Davidson that he was in the habit of sleeping with Mr. Bender and arose at the customary hour Thursday morning, watered and fed the stock and started breakfast. Mrs. Sarah Yale Olmstead of 801 East Summer Street died at her home about noon yesterday [September 16, 1918]. Mrs. Olmstead was born at Saratoga Springs, New York, December 25, 1841. Mrs. Bertha Wright, wife of A. M. Wright, died at her home on the north side early last Monday morning [September 30, 1901] of typhoid fever.
