Came From Pacific Coast

Tonight the veterans will leave for home.

The official roster shows that the visiting veterans came to Kalamazoo from all points of the compass and one daughter of the regiment, Mrs. Viola A. Kenyon, who hasn’t missed a reunion in several years, came half way across the continent, from Olympia, Washington, to attend the event.

The Thirteenth Michigan was recruited largely from this section of the state and left here in the early part of the struggle of ’61 for the south country. It saw its hardest service at Chickamauga and the engagement of Stone River, about 30 miles out of Nashville, Tenn. One of the last battles in which Thirteenth participated was the engagement of Bentonville when the regiment lost 98 men in killed and wounded in less than 20 minutes.

Comrade ‘Wesley McBride and his good wife of Hopkins were pleasant visitors during the reunion. When it comes to being a whole-souled, patriotic comrade “Wes” is there with the goods all right.

Mitchelsburg, Kentucky. Dear Old Comrades of the 13th Infantry :

I have lived here right near the old Perryville battlefield for twenty years.

I served three years in Co. C. Lost three fingers at Bentonville. I never yet have attended any of the Regimental Reunions, but I am going to next year, if possible.

I would like to see my old home state once more.
