Ed McEwen, jockey killed in a race, former Ellensburg boy thrown by horse; was born here and parents were pioneers of the Kittitas Valley.. Walla Walla, June 5-Ed McEwen, Walla Walla, jockey for Geo. Drumheller, was killed during the annual Waitsburg racing matinee yesterday afternoon [June 4, 1920]. The fatal accident occurred during the three-eights mile handicap next to the last race, when his horse threw him from the saddle breaking his neck. Baker City Edgar Albert Scheloske, 79, a former Baker City resident, died Feb. 22, 2006, at Ontario. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Thomason Funeral Home in Weiser, Idaho. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Weiser, Idaho. He was born on Jan. 20, 1927, at Weiser, Idaho, to Albert Antone and Addie Rose Glascock Scheloske. Halfway, Oregon Lela Shelton, 77, of Halfway, died Sept. 10, 2002, near Cornucopia. Her graveside memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. La Grande, Oregon Kenneth L. Smith, 78, died July 10 at the Veterans Hospital in Seattle after a lengthy illness. A funeral service was held on July 16 in Kirkland, Wash. He was born on Nov. 23, 1928, in La Grande. Ken barbered for many years in the Bothel area of Seattle. He was also a tree-topper in northeast Seattle for many years.
