Watlala Tribe
The Watlala Tribe, part of the Chinookan family, originally inhabited the Columbia River cascades and Dog River in Oregon. Post-epidemic of 1829, the Watlala emerged as the last remaining tribe, likely formed from remnants of neighboring groups. In 1854, they were reported to number approximately 80 and later participated in the Treaty of 1855, aligning with the Wasco tribes. They were subsequently relocated to the Warm Springs Reservation, where a few descendants persist. The term “Watlala” may also encompass all Upper Chinook tribes.
