Shawnee Indian Chiefs and Leaders
Big Jim, a prominent Shawnee leader known as Wapameepto, was born in 1834 and became chief of the Kispicotha band in 1872. He was a descendant of Tecumseh and staunchly conservative, opposing land allotments imposed by settlers. His commitment to preserving traditional ways led him to seek refuge for his people in Mexico, where he died in 1900. Other notable Shawnee figures include chiefs like Black Bob, Bluejacket, Catahecassa, and Tenskwatawa, each contributing to the tribe’s history through leadership and resistance against encroachment by white settlers.
