Mrs. Walter S. Bowman, 79, Pendleton resident since 1901, well known here, died Sunday morning [December 5, 1954] in St. Anthony’s Hospital after an illness of 17 days. Mrs. Bowman, formerly Eugenia Ellenberger [adopted name] was born in Berne, Switzerland, and first came to Umatilla County when she was 13, living in Pilot Rock with her mother the last Mrs. Fritz Ellenberger. She came here in 1901. She and the late Mr. Bowman, a pioneer photographer, were married in 1934. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Rebekah Lodge, and the Pioneer Ladies Club. Killed By Falling Tree A former resident of Wallowa county, Fancho Stubblefield, lives at Lehman Springs, 90 miles south of Pendleton, where one man was killed and another seriously injured by a falling tree Saturday night. The two were cutting wood for Mr. Stubblefield and slept in a bunk house, which was crushed by the tree. Oliver Young was killed and Vic McCormick was injured.
