Slave Narrative of Isaac Adams

Isaac Adams, born in Louisiana in 1856, recounts his experiences as a child slave on the plantation owned by Mr. Sack P. Gee. He describes a prosperous estate with vast cotton fields and a supportive master who cared for his enslaved workers. As the Civil War approached, the presence of Confederate soldiers and the subsequent arrival of Union forces altered life on the plantation. After the war, Mr. Gee offered former slaves the option to stay and farm the land, reflecting a complex transition to freedom. Adams later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he reflects on his past.
