Tuscarora Indians

The Tuscarora, meaning “hemp gatherers,” were part of the Iroquoian linguistic family, primarily located along the Roanoke, Tar, Pamlico, and Neuse Rivers in North Carolina. This confederacy, comprising three subtribes, faced significant challenges from white colonists, culminating in two wars between 1711 and 1713. Following these conflicts, many Tuscarora migrated north to join the Iroquois, with recognition from the Oneida. Their population fluctuated over the years, reflecting their turbulent history and adaptations in response to external pressures.
